DCR Mining

How traditional Decred mining works

Decred combines proof-of-work miners with proof-of-stake ticket voters. Miners assemble blocks; stakeholders vote on those blocks and on consensus changes. That hybrid design is the main operational difference versus Bitcoin-style PoW-only coins.

Historically, Decred PoW used BLAKE-256 with 14 rounds (Blake256R14-dcr). DCP-0011 changed the PoW hash to BLAKE3 while the block hash remains BLAKE-256 14-round. The Blake256R14-dcr machines on this site (DR5, Whatsminer D1, StrongU) are that older generation. Verify current pool and firmware support before you treat those units as live Decred hardware.

Decred mining pools

Use a pool that states which PoW hash it expects (BLAKE3 vs legacy Blake256R14-dcr):

  • Decred-aware pools: Check MiningPoolStats for currently advertised DCR stratum.
  • dcrpool: Official stratum implementation; operators run PPS or PPLNS. Default miner port :5550.
  • 2Miners: Multi-coin operator; confirm the DCR algorithm listed on their coin page before pointing ASICs.

Decred mining algorithm

Do not assume “Decred ASIC” means current consensus. Pre-DCP-0011 ASICs hash Blake256R14-dcr. After DCP-0011, the PoW hash is BLAKE3. A machine that only speaks the old hash will not earn on a BLAKE3 pool.

Ticket voting is separate: you lock DCR for a ticket, then vote. Mining and staking can be done by different people. Miners still need a DCR address for coinbase.

How to set up a Decred mining rig

  • 1. Confirm the live PoW hash

Read Decred mining docs and your pool’s algorithm line. If the pool wants BLAKE3, a Blake256R14-dcr-only ASIC will not work.

  • 2. Set up a Decred wallet

Use Decrediton or another listed wallet. Save a mainnet address for pool payouts.

  • 3. Configure the miner

Point stratum at a pool that matches your firmware. dcrpool’s default listen port is 5550 when you run your own pool.

  • 4. Be cautious with firmware

Only vendor or Decred-documented firmware. Random “DCR BLAKE3” images are a high-risk category.

  • 5. Start mining

Watch both miner hashrate and whether the pool is actually finding DCR blocks. Coinbase maturity is 256 blocks.

Frequently asked questions

Decred is a cryptocurrency with PoW miners and PoS ticket voters sharing consensus. Site: decred.org.

Only if the network and your pool still accept that unit’s hash. After DCP-0011 the PoW hash is BLAKE3. Treat the Blake256R14-dcr catalog on this site as hardware history plus any pools that still list that algorithm.

No. Ticket holders vote. Miners produce block templates; voters approve them.

Decred’s current docs state there is no maintained GPU path for the live PoW hash. Plan around the algorithm your pool actually runs.
